Variety broke the news that the show was in the works, one of the latest moves by Amazon to take advantage of the IP they acquired when they bought MGM in March 2022. The project is still very much in its early days, with no writer currently attached to adapt the story to the small screen.

The 1982 film, co-written and produced by Steven Spielberg and directed by Tobe Hooper (The Texas Chainsaw Massacre), centers on a family moving into a house that already has some angry, supernatural inhabitants who kidnap five-year-old Carol Anne (Heather O’Rourke). It’s an iconic horror film that, for those of a certain age, was a staple of sleepover parties and the cause of more than a few nightmares.

This isn’t the first Poltergeist television show in existence. In the mid-1990s, Showtime came out with a series called Poltergeist: The Legacy, which centered on a group called The Legacy that fights against any and all evil supernatural forces that threaten humanity. The show ran for three seasons on Showtime and had a fourth and final season on the Sci-Fi Channel (later rebranded as the SyFy channel) in 1999.

It’s not clear what route this new television adaptation will take, but chances are hopefully good it won’t duplicate the premise The Legacy explored.

Given it’s still early days for the project, no news on when the series will go into production, much less possess your television set.
